This guide applies to MacBooks with Apple Silicon (M1 and above).
It uses Erase Assistant, which is the recommended and simplest method.
Before you start (important)

This process permanently deletes all data, please make sure you have backed up your data before proceeding further

Make sure:

You know your Apple ID password
-
The MacBook is connected to Wi-Fi
-
The MacBook is plugged into power

Step 1: Open Erase Assistant

Click the Apple menu () in the top-left corner

Select System Settings
-
Go to General
-
Click Transfer or Reset
-
Select Erase All Content and Settings
Step 2: Review what will be erased
You’ll see a summary explaining that the following will be removed:

User accounts
-
Files and data
-
Apple ID & iCloud
-
Touch ID & passwords
-
Network settings
Click Continue.
Step 3: Enter your passwords

Enter your Mac login password
-
Enter your Apple ID password
(This disables Find My and removes Activation Lock)
⚠️ This step is required.
Step 4: Start the erase process

Click Erase All Content and Settings
-
The MacBook will:
-
Restart automatically
-
Erase all data
-
Reinstall macOS
-
⏳ This usually takes 10–30 minutes, depending on internet speed.
Step 5: Stop at the setup screen (important)
When the erase is complete, you’ll see the “Hello” setup screen.
Do not sign in again
To finish:

Press Command (⌘) + Q

Select Shut Down
The MacBook is now factory reset and ready for the next user.
